This credit union was originally federally chartered, in 1935, by a small group of public school teachers as Dade County Florida Teachers Federal Credit Union to serve the public school employees of Dade County, Florida. A name change in 1972 better reflected that all school employees were eligible: Dade County School Employees Federal Credit Union, which also included the addition of Miami-Dade Community College, a two year community college at that time.
The CU officially changed it‘s name to South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union in January 2000 after the county’s name was changed to Miami-Dade. South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union better reflects the credit union's educational focus.
