Entertainment Venue Log Cabin Council on Aging In Jensen Beach, FL

Part of Martin County’s History:

The Log Cabin was originally constructed in Stuart by the Civil Works Administration during the Depression. Over the years, it was used as a civic center, dance hall and rehearsal center. The building was dismantled in the 1960’s with the logs numbered and stored for future reassembly. In 1981, the Log Cabin was reconstructed at Langford Park in Jensen Beach and dedicated as a senior center administered by the Council on Aging for all Martin County for all seniors to enjoy.

A variety of classes are offered at the senior center to encourage lifelong learning, enhance physical fitness and provide artistic expression.

Free, low-impact exercise classes, which concentrate on stretching to remain limber, are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Classes taught by Indian River Community College instructors run in 15-week cycles and are open to seniors who are 55 years of age or older. Some of these courses include German, French, Spanish, psychology, exercise, Tai Chi, photography, watercolor and oil painting, stained glass art and life skills. The fee for each class is $30 per semester.

Workshops featuring crafts, floral design and watercolor painting are offered regularly. Costs range from $3 to $30.

Congregate Meal Site:

The Log Cabin serves as one of the seven congregate meal sites throughout Martin County which are run by the Council on Aging. Meal sites provide nutritional assistance for seniors who are in economic need and provide a place to socialize for seniors who are isolated.

A warm, noontime meal is served Monday through Friday to seniors 60 years of age and older. The meal provides one-third of the recommended daily allowance for seniors. While no fee is charged for the meals, donations are accepted.

Nutrition education sessions are provided monthly to help improve eating habits and purchasing practices.

Activities, Clubs and MORE:

The Log Cabin Senior Center also serves as a gathering place and information center for seniors.

A group luncheon is held once a month and open to all seniors. Those participating are encouraged to bring their favorite covered dish to share with others. Beverages are provided.

Special events include holiday celebrations and an annual "Salute to Seniors Day" in May in recognition of Older Americans Month.

Craft and woodcarving clubs meet on a weekly basis.

Tax assistance, pro-bono legal advice and weekly health screenings with educational seminars are offered.
