Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam

Lake Seminole is located at the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers upstream of Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam.

The &#$;46,5000,000 Corps of Engineers project was authorised by Congress in 1946 and completed in 1957.

The lock and dam improves navigation and provides a power source for the generation of electricity. Before construction of the project the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers were only 3 feet deep. A channel 9 feet deep and 100 feet wide is maintained to allow for commercial river traffic. The maintained channel extends commercial navigation to Columbus, Georgia, on the Chattahoochee and bainbridge, Georgia, on the Flint River.

Electricity generated at Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam is transferred and sold through the Florida Power Corporation. The powerhouse is usually operated continuously so that the flow of water is utilized. Nearly 50,000 homes can be served by the electricity generated at the project. Group tours of the powerhouse can be arranged by calling the Powerhouse Superintendent at 904-663-2291.
