Welcomes you to the St. Lucie Inlet
A true ocean gateway to the Treasure Coast, the St. Lucie Inlet, located between the southern most tip of Hutchinson Island and St Lucie Inlet State Park, northern tip of Jupiter Island in Martin County, Florida, offers ocean access to the Indian River (Intracoastal Waterway), the St. Lucie River and Okeechobee Waterway.
The granite tablet marker now standing on the south side of the St.
Lucie Inlet recalls that the Inlet was gazed upon by the famous
explorer Cabot in 1496 and appeared on maps in 1500 and 1683.
Jonathan Dickinson's crew passed through in 1696. In 1844, before the
modern dredge, Samuel Peck and settlers of the Indian River Armed
Occupation Colony took picks and shovels making the first recorded
opening. The Inlet has been opened and closed many times throughout
its history. Just as the tides deliver exotic shells and treasures
from the Atlantic Ocean, great amounts of sand have washed up and
filled the Inlet. Once again, the Inlet filled in. For $2,000 in
1892, the dredge was brought in to create a more permanent opening
than man-power could supply. In 1981, the Inlet was opened for $8
million.
Although the dredging continues from time to time, the St. Lucie
Inlet opens up a playground for today's boaters. Within the Inlet lie
a number of barrier islands ready for exploring, while outside the
Inlet is plenty of sport fishing, and the Bahamas are only 65 miles
away. The Inlet continues to welcome modern-day explores from all
over the world.
